In the end, it’s different strokes for different folks. People have the freedom to choose their source of inspiration and moral sense of values.
Veteran actor and Broadcaster Patrick Doyle is well-respected man. He comes from the glory days of Nollywood in the 90s, where he was always casted as a pastor combating the forces of evil and dark powers.
And although his advancement in age has greatly reduced his role in movie sector, he is still a respected voice. That voice has spoken, and it is against the impact of Davido’s music.
In an interview with Hip TV while explaining the impact of entertainment and pop culture on the people, said the ’30 billion for the account’ which is a popular catchphrase in Davido’s record ‘If', is not a good message to pass to the young people.
He explained that singers who are conscious of the message they pass with their music are needed; and that the ‘singer’ (Davido)
although not aware might have caused an insatiable want in the minds of the youths which might lead them to engage in desperate measures to have such money.
“Entertainment is a glamour thing but a lot of the people who are inside of the business are really pawns in another person’s game because entertainment and pop culture impact the people in an insidious manner,” he told HIP TV.
“When you start telling a young child that ’30 billion for your account’, he is gonna grow up wanting to get 30 billion by any means necessary.
I’m sure the boy who sang 30 billion doesn’t understand what he has done but he has put in the mind of young people that anyhow you like: Yahoo plus, kidnapping the money must be made.”
There’s some wisdom in what Patrick Doyle says. Pop music has a strong hold on the minds of impressionable youths.
For many, the creative exhibitionism and music video lifestyles is regarded as the benchmark of reality for many young minds, who are yet to come to terms with reality.
“30 billion for the account,” for all its good intentions of flavoring a pop song, might take on a new meaning in the minds of many.
It can be either be good or bad, depending on who gets it, or what they choose to do with it.
Nobody needs an excuse to commit crime. Long before Davido was conceived, crime existed. Since the inception of the world,
humans have always searched for new immoral ways to profit from society, at the expense of innocents. Davido met that system, and he isn’t encouraging it.
He is simply seeking to profit from a fairly legal way. When young people look at Davido and his wealth, they think about his father’s money, and then how he has been able to combine it with his talent to create more wealth for himself. They see hard work.
They see dedication. They see success.
The guy who stole money the day before he heard “30 billion for the account”, will still steal again after he hears “30 billion for the account.” No change there.
It is dependent on every individual with a critical thought process to draw inspiration from where he sees fit. Davido is not the cause of their bad behaviour, they are.
On the flip side, how about the hardworking, upstanding individuals who are inspired by “30 billion for the account”? How about these smart people who use it as a benchmark for financial success and are driven to solve great problems, earn money and stack it up?
Are we going to ignore that?
In the end, it’s different strokes for different folks. People have the freedom to choose their source of inspiration and moral sense of values. If they choose Davido and his cash, they have to live with the consequences. If they don’t, they will still have to deal with whatever choice they make.
But the music must go on. There are millions of lives to affect, and 30 billion to be made in the account.
